Send any new questions by email to Ian W. Duff. What is Sand and Gravel used for ?Sand and gravel is used to build roads, sidewalks, driveways, basements, sewers, walls, roofs, gardens, walkways, paths, schools, factories, offices, parking lots, recreation centers, sports fields, golf courses, and hiking trails. Back to TopWhere does Sand & Gravel come from ?Sand and gravel is found in only in certain areas around Ontario. It used to be bedrock that was ground up by the movement and melting of glaciers during the last ice age which ended just over 10,000 years ago. Back to TopWhat is the difference between a Pit and a Quarry ?A pit contains loose sand and gravel that is dug directly out of the ground. A quarry contains bedrock that must be blasted first before it can be processed. A Pit can produce some products that consist of round stones, whereas all products from a quarry are crushed (ie have sharp edges). Back to TopWhat is Aggregate?Aggregate basically is sand, gravel and crushed stone i.e. all the products of a pit or quarry. Back to TopHow much Aggregate is used in Ontario very year ?150,000,000 metric tons (or tonnes) or about one truckload per man, woman and child in Ontario each year. Back to TopCan I arrange a Pit Tour ?Absolutely... most producers in Ontario would be proud to have you through their sites. If you are near Halton Hills give us a call or contact the APAO for a pit or quarry near you. Back to Top |
